Norfolk State University, or NSU for short, is a four-year, state-supported, coed, liberal arts, historically black university located in Norfolk, which is an independent city in the Commonwealth of the US state of Virginia, with a population estimated at a number of more than 237 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the 2nd largest city in the state, behind neighboring Virginia Beach.
NSU was founded in 1935, first starting as Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University, or VUU, the institution adopting its current name in 1979, when it was granted university status, by the General Assembly of Virginia. Today, NSU is considered to be one of the state's finest universities, and it offers its students educational programs in various fields of study, including two doctorate and 15 master's degrees and 36 undergraduate degrees, as well as Master's degree programs in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, and Criminal Justice, through 8 colleges and schools.
Athletics
It's athletic teams are known as the Spartans, who compete in various sports, for both men and women, in NCAA Division I (Football Championship Subdivision for all sports including football) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
